2025 Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship in Central South University

To meet the growing international demand for Chinese language teachers, facilitate Chinese language education around the world, and support the professional development of Chinese language teachers, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has established the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Outstanding students and in-service Chinese language teachers recommended by Confucius Institutes, independent Confucius Classrooms, selected HSK test centers, foreign educational institutions, Chinese language teacher training programs/Chinese departments at foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language teaching, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (hereinafter collectively referred to as Recommending Institutions) are warmly welcomed to study Chinese language in Central South University.
I.Eligibility
All applicants shall be :
1. Non-Chinese citizens;
2. Be friendly to China, have no criminal record, abide by the laws and regulations of China and the rules and regulations of the Host Institution;
3. In good physical and mental conditions, and with good academic performance and conduct;
4. Committed to the Chinese language education and related work;
5. Be aged between 16 and 35 on September 1, 2025. Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall not be over 45.
II.Scholarship Types and Qualifications
1. Scholarship for One-Year Study Program (Chinese Language Study)
The program commences in September 2025, and provides scholarship for a maximum of 11 months. Applicants are required to get a minimum score of 210 in HSK 3, and priority is given to those who have an HSKK test score. In principle, applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible for the One-Year Study Program.
2. Scholarship for One-Semester Study Program (Chinese Language Study)
The program commences either in September 2025 or March 2026, and provides scholarship of a maximum of 5 months. Applicants are required to get a minimum score of 180 in HSK 3, and an HSKK test score is also required. In principle, applicants who have received a similar scholarship within three years are not eligible for the One-Semester Study Program.
III.Scholarship Coverage and Criteria
The One-Semester Study Program and One-Year Study Program provide full coverage on tuition fee, on-campus accommodation, living allowance (monthly stipend of 2500 RMB for one-academic-year study students per person and one-semester study students per person) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses (400 RMB for one-semester study students per person, 800 RMB annually for one-academic-year study students per person).
IV.Application Deadlines (Beijing Time)
For programs commencing in September 2025, the student’s application must be completed before May 15; recommending institutions and host institutions must complete the review before May 25;
For programs commencing in March 2026, the student’s application must be completed before October 31; recommending institutions and host institutions must complete the review before November 10;
CLEC will entrust an expert panel to review the applications. Decisions will be based on HSK and HSKK levels and scores, geographical distribution, and other factors. The results will be announced about three months before the program starts.
V.Application Procedures
Online Registration on International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Application Website. From now on, Online registration is available on the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship application website (cis.chinese.cn). Please log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions (Central South University); and upload application materials online.
Online Registration on CSU Application Website. Log on to CSU China International Student Service System and register online: https://intl.csu.edu.cn/index.htm. Choose Central South University Scholarship for International Chinese Language Teachers (Confucius Institute Scholarship) and upload the following application materials online and submit them.
The materials mentioned below shall be provided in English or Chinese. Materials in any other language should be notarized in Chinese or English.
1. A scanned copy of passport photo page (over one-year availability);
2. A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within two-year validity);
3. A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions;
4. Applicants under the age of 18 must provide certified ID certificates, employment certificates, and LETTER OF GUARANTEE CSU.doc from the guardian living in China;
5. Photocopy of Foreigner Physical Check (attachment). Applicants should strictly be examined in accordance with the requirement of Physical Examination Record.pdf. Incomplete form is regarded as invalid. The examination date shall be after October 1, 2024;
6. Photocopy of Highest graduation certificate. If the applicant is currently a student, the pre-graduation certificate issued by school is required;
7. Transcript of the highest diploma with an official stamp;
8. Non-criminal record with an official stamp. The issue date shall be after October 1, 2024;
9. In-service Chinese language teachers need to provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.
Confirm with CSU to go through the procedures of studying in China. Track the application progress, comments and results on International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Application Website. Scholarship holders need to confirm with CSU to go through the procedures of studying in China.
Pay the Application Fee. After passing the online preliminary review, please complete the application fee payment within two weeks, otherwise the application cannot continue. Those who fail the preliminary review do not need to pay the application fee.
Complete the Application and Wait for the Result. The Admission Notice and visa application form will be sent according to the final admission results. Application status will be informed in the CSU China International Student Service System. Please log in to check the admission status in time.
VI.Admission
1.Applicants shall register on time according to the Admission Letter;
2.If there is any fraud in the application materials, the application will be disqualified. In registration, all the original documents will be reviewed and the admission will be canceled if there is any fraud or inconsistency. Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from school before completing the program, fail to register at the university without prior permission, or suspend their studies will be disqualified for the scholarship;
3.Interviews (through phone call or Wechat, etc.) and other support materials might be required in certain occasions;
4.The evaluation fee will not be refunded regardless of the admission result. The final result will be subject to that released on cis.chinese.cn.
VII.Policies regarding in-service Chinese language teachers and Chinese Bridge winners
1. In-Service Chinese Language Teachers
In-service Chinese language teachers need to provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the employer.
2. Chinese Bridge Winners
Applicants who have received the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate during Chinese Bridge competitions need to submit their application documents along with their scholarship certificates to the Host Institutions directly at the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website.
